Haematology
The haematology department provides a full diagnostic laboratory and clinical service at the Countess of Chester Hospital to patients with a range of clinical conditions including:
- blood cancer- acute leukaemia, chronic leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other associated haematology malignancies
- thrombosis and blood clotting disorders
- general and immune haematology
- management and monitoring of anticoagulation
- those requiring blood transfusion.
The department is responsible for inpatients, outpatients, and day-case patients. Inpatient care is situated on a 16-bed ward which includes ten side rooms, exclusively used in the care of haematology patients receiving intensive chemotherapy for conditions such as acute leukaemia, relapsed lymphomas, and management of post-chemotherapy complications.
Our standalone outpatient department is a dedicated space for the haematology team to review both new and follow-up patients. The medical day unit, (attached to the outpatient department) is reserved for patients receiving chemotherapy or undergoing day case procedures such as bone marrow biopsies or venesection.
The department is led by four haematology consultants:
- Clinical lead- Dr Sean McGoldrick
- Dr Salaheddin Tueger
- Dr Arvind Pillai
- Dr Matthew Alley
In addition to our consultant team, we have haematology clinical nurse specialists, junior doctors, pharmacists, cancer support workers and nurses specialised in delivering chemotherapy, all providing an excellent high standard of clinical care.
We work closely with the trials team to provide cutting edge national trials to our patients.
