Unsung Hero Awards success

Helen NowakowskaHelen Nowakowska, Business Performance Manager in Diagnostics and Infrastructure Division, scooped an NHS Unsung Hero Award in a glitzy ceremony in Manchester on 23 February.

Helen, who has worked for the Countess for 12 years, won The Leader of the Year Award in the Corporate Functions category, having been nominated by former Reception Co-ordinator Hayley Carey.

The Unsung Hero Awards are an annual event designed to recognise the invaluable contribution made by non-medical and non-clinical staff.

“It was a lovely occasion because I never expected to win! It was a very special moment because it was Hayley who nominated me and I worked with her for many years,” Helen said. “It always means more when it comes from colleagues and the event itself was also a great opportunity to meet people from other hospitals in the same roles.”

Helen, whose award is proudly placed on a wall in her office, has been inundated with messages of congratulations both from current and former colleagues.

The Countess was well represented at the awards show at the Principal Hotel in Manchester, with the ICT Escalation Team (Kevin Harrower, Jack Hart) and Divisional Director Linda Fellowes also nominated for gongs.

“We were there in numbers representing the Countess and that was great to see,” Helen added. “There are so many people doing fantastic non-clinical work around the Trust and it was great to be part of something to recognise that.”

Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham, who was in attendance, said on the night: “I know as a former health secretary that the NHS is full of Unsung Heroes… we don’t talk enough about the secretaries, the IT staff, the porters, the cleaners. They are what keeps the NHS show on the road and I am here tonight to recognise that and say a massive thank you to each and every one of you for what you do to keep our wonderful NHS running from one day to the next. We really couldn’t do without you.”
